Cannot go anywhere without my Kindle. Do you have yours yet?
When you move cities, you can’t always carry everything with you. Some things you need to leave behind to make space for new things. Space, that is the biggest issue sometimes and recently I have found a new-found love for my Kindle e-reader. I have been travelling a bit and obviously while travelling it is not feasible to carry too much, and paperbacks can get heavy. So my Kindle has become my constant companion these days. I am using the 10th gen Kindle Paperwhite that weighs 174grams and measures 8.7mm in width. Now, while sometimes for certain places it is okay to pack to our heart’s content but I couldn’t do that all the time and books take up lots of space and make luggage heavy. I am also picky so sometimes I would carry a very heavy book and it would just make it really inconvenient to lug around my heavy bag. With Kindle, that problem is magically solved. With Kindle, you can carry hundreds of books without even sacrificing the space for one medium-sized paperback. So that was the biggest reason for my switch- the lack of portability with physical books.
I have been reading on my e-reader whenever I have some spare time on hand because I have been lagging behind a lot. So I can say with a lot of certainty that reading on the mediatek powered Kindle is truly convenient and comfortable. I can literally read in pitch blackness in the comfort of my blankets without straining my eyes or my hands getting sore, because it’s very lightweight too! Also, reading outside in the sun is just like reading a paperback. There are no problems with glare and the interface is truly like a paper, hence the name Paperwhite. Then, it saves a lot of money too. Now I only buy books that I actually want to collect or the ones that I have loved too much and need to read a paperback of. With the Kindle you also get access to audio books because it comes equipped with support for Audible, the Amazon-owned store for audiobooks, which is so amazing! I love listening to audiobooks of mostly non-fiction books and sometimes self-help books or even old classics that I don’t have time to read all 900 pages of. I just put it on in the background and I’m good to go. I multitask around while listening to audiobooks cause that’s the best way to listen to them really.
Apart from buying books available from the Kindle Store, you can also read DRM-free books that you have purchased from other sources online. These can be downloaded through various online portals and be transferred to your device. I have a lot of PDFs of books that I have bought or downloaded online through different sources and websites which I have transferred to my Kindle to read easily. Furthermore, to improve your reading experience especially for non-Kindle Store books, there are some features that can help. You can choose from a small number of fonts like Bookerly, Amazon Ember, Baskerville etc. that are really good. My favourite is Bookerly and I use that for all my books. You can also select the layout and adjust margins, orientation, alignment and spacing in that area. There are several themes as well to choose from plus you can also adjust the font size and even the weight (making text bolder), which is a really nice touch. In battery performance also the device performs pretty well and goes up to a week on a single charge with at least two to three hours of reading, sometimes more, everyday with some purchases from the store as well. This is decently above-average and impressive. Additionally, if I use my Kindle for an hour each day, it won’t need to be charged for more than once every fortnight. I think that also goes very well with my being constantly on the go. So yes, I would suggest if you are someone like me who likes to read but also can’t afford to take a lot of physical copies of books with you, the Amazon Kindle is your savior!
