Toxic work culture can be defined as a negative and unproductive atmosphere in the workplace that can lead to decreased productivity, morale, and even serious consequences on an employee’s physical and mental health. Here are some of the red flags and survival tips to recognize and survive a toxic work environment:

Red Flags:
Lack of transparency: In a toxic work environment, it’s never really clear what the company culture entails. Values and beliefs are obscure and rarely discussed.

Negative attitudes and beliefs: Everyone is aware of what the company culture is within the workplace, and new candidates learn about it ahead of time to ensure they feel like the best fit. In a toxic work environment, negative attitudes and beliefs are prevalent.

Power abuse: Power abuse fosters an environment of toxicity, and may decrease employee morale. It can manifest in various harmful ways, such as bullying, coercion, and pressure.

Survival Tips:
Identify the problem: Recognize the signs of a toxic work environment and identify the problem.

Speak up: Speak up to your manager or HR department about the issues you are facing.

Take care of yourself: Take care of your physical and mental health by practicing self-care, such as exercise, meditation, and therapy.
Set boundaries: Set boundaries and prioritize your work-life balance.
Look for a new job: If the situation is unbearable, consider looking for a new job.
